Measuring the blood supply to or within the brain can be advantageous for studying:
- Stroke and ischemic models
- Drug and pharmacological agents
- Stress and neurological conditions
Cerebral perfusion measurements allow for analysis of regional microcirculation. A Laser Doppler Probe placed gently on the surface of the cerebral cortex measures perfusion in 1 cubic mm of tissue.
Carotid artery blood flow is a useful measure of total cerebral blood flow as it is easy to access and doesn’t require penetrating the skull. Transonic® flow probes may be used for chronic or acute measurements of carotid blood flow in all animal models.
