DeBakey to Receive Congressional Gold Medal
Pioneering cardiac surgeon Michael E. DeBakey will soon be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for a lifetime of achievements. In October Congress passed and the President signed legislation authorizing the medal. Currently the Philadelphia mint is researching possible designs for the unique medal and will present options for the decision by the Secretary of the Treasury. The mint will then strike the medal and a ceremony will be arranged in Washington DC within the next few months. The Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded to about 300 U.S. citizens and foreign luminaries since the first was given to George Washington in 1776.
Dr. DeBakey celebrated his 99th birthday this fall and continues to practice medicine. He has been awarded numerous medals and awards over the years. To name just a few, these include:
- Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research
- The United Nations Lifetime Achievement Award
- Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson
- The National Medal of Science from President Ronald Reagan
- Lifetime Achievement Award of the Foundation for Biomedical Research
Dr. DeBakey partnered with his colleague Dr. George Noon and NASA engineers informally starting in 1987 working on the development of a miniature heart pump or ventricular assist device (VAD.) When it was introduced, the DeBakey VAD® was the first axial flow pump for this purpose, and weighing less than 100 grams, it was about one tenth the size of the previously available VADs. In 1996 MicroMed was formed to commercialize the DeBakey VAD® 1998 saw the first clinical implant of the DeBakey VAD® which is just one of several surgical devices and procedures to carry Dr. DeBakey’s name.
Transonic Systems Inc is a proud collaborator with MicroMed Cardiovascular supplying Transonic Inside OEM Transit-Time Ultrasound Flowmeter and Flowprobe components which allows the device to measure and report true volume flow on a continuous basis in patients both in the hospital and at home, leading productive, fulfilling lives while being supported by the DeBakey VAD®. The 400th implant of DeBakey VAD® occurred in Dec 2006.
